B) For God’s sake, stop saying "go get a free consultation". There is NOTHING FREE when it comes to attorneys. Personal injury attorneys will talk to you for a very short time for "free" and promptly kick you out if they figure they can’t take you for real hard ride. I wouldn’t call that "free" either.
C) Why don’t you try to actually "help" someone if you are wasting your time in here? A wrong answer would be MUCH better than your cop out NON answer of "go talk to an attorney". Talk to this fool! nIn
NO lawyers other than personal injury take case on contingency. The last one I talked to just sent me a BILL for 0 to sit across a desk for an hour, NOT answer my questions, and tell me he couldn’t help me. Real World, people. NOT YA!
NOT ONLY are attorney NEVER , EVER free they are almost always DAMN EXPENSIVE. So you see … unless you really really know the answer don’t you feel sending so many people in such a bad direction?
For the record, two times in my life I have benefited from a FREE consultation with a lawyer. and both times it has saved me money and time. What is your beef, NOT all cases turn out just as you have described, sometimes a lawyer will take a case on contingency and be paid when or IF the case is decided in their clients favor, its a gamble and some lawyers can take a gamble once in a while.
Don’t go suggesting anyone go to one of the Decyples of Sigmund FRAUD!

Well, I am glad you are so thankful for people who want to help.
There are some cases that require the services of an attorney, due to complexity, topic or legal implications. In those cases, for us NOT to suggest talking to an attorney would be improper at best, malpractice at worst for those who practice.
I am not an attorney (nor do I ever claim to be) but I AM trained as a paralegal and I do work with the local court system part time.
Apparently, you have great dislike for lawyers. That’s fine. But in the system we have today, there are times when one is necessary.
And as far as free consultations, you are right, there is nothing free. But many good upstanding attorneys will do an initial appointment for a reduced fee if the situation warrants to see what can be done. Being an attorney is a job, and of course they should make money.

You’re exactly right. Most questions here involve civil litigation which doesn’t require a lawyer, at all. People don’t seem to understand that they can sue someone for a small filing fee in Small Claims Court.
On the other hand, I got hurt at work and the lawyers got me me what I was asking for. Originally, I told them that I wanted $10,000 to cover future surgery. They came back to me and said they got it, but that they would get 33% of it. I told them that I wanted $10,000 in my pocket and that they would have to negotiate for their fee. They got the company to settle for $12,800. I got $10.000, and they got the rest. Much less than their usual 33%.
Another time, my son got turned down for SSI. He has a brain malformation. He’s 13 now and has speech/ cognitive delay, physical delay, hearing aids, etc, etc. We went to a free consult with a Soc Sec lawyer, showed him the medical records, etc. He picked up the phone and called the head of the Social Security Admin. in our state and explained how ‘real’ our case was. We didn’t even have to file the appeal. He greased the wheels for us with the local gov’t official. No charge.
Lawyers are useful, but like you say, very unneccessary in most cases.
I won’t dispute or argue your points about what attorneys do/ don’t do. You seem to have an issue understanding what yahoo answers is about.. this is simply an area online where people are free to ask for info..and people offer some advice.
I am not an attorney and don’t pretend to be. I do have plenty of life experience, and some research on certain topics.
The fact is that MANY people come here, expecting a licensed lawyer to take their case.. online..and tell them what to do. And they often need to be told.. this is NOT free lawyer.com, but yahoo. And what they hear from persons here, CAN be inaccurate.
No. Someone KNOWING their limits here is a good thing. And giving a wrong answer IS NOT good, when someone’s life, freedom or child is on the line. Most people know that what is here is just opinions..but some don’t.
Sorry that YOU don’t like what people are told here.. but that sounds like a personal issue, to me. I’d rather tell someone to get their butt to a lawyer, because they have a lot to lose.. than give bad advise that does not really fit their problem.
